America’s exceptional founding as a nation is set out by the declaration of God-given inalienable rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” We are free to make our own way, to strive for our own satisfaction, success and prosperity. However, we should remember that with our freedom comes great responsibility. The ideal that we not only work hard to get ahead, but also reach out to help others achieve their potential is inherently American. We should make it our goal to provide all people access to the ladder of success, starting at home but also abroad, as we are able. The true and lasting prosperity of America depends on our collective commitment to this ideal.
We as a society are seemingly past the crossroads in regard to how this ideal is achieved. For far too long, both major political parties have been guilty of prescribing socialistic federal government programs and regulations that dictate the same paths and solutions for all. If this continues, the “American dream” will be lost as national debt is increasing in almost exponential quantities. However, I will continue and MUST continue to remain optimistic of the future of our nation for the sake of my seven children and their future children. I still believe we can embrace collaboration between federal, state and local authorities, faith-based groups, entrepreneurial individuals and private businesses to offer opportunity as well as assistance in a FREE exchange of solutions, learning from each as to what is successful. I believe the only way forward for our nation is the latter combination, utilizing our greatest resource, the genius of the American people, to meet the many challenges we face for insuring liberty and justice for all, including future generations of Americans.
